Wendy Mead OBE

 

Wendy Mead OBE CC was first elected to The City of London Court of Common Council in 1997 during the campaign to save Bart’s Hospital from closure, which she led. Bart’s celebrated its 900th birthday in 2023. It is now a world class centre for Cardiology and Oncology, still on its original site in Smithfield.

Since that time, she has acquired a deep knowledge of how the City works having served on many Council Committees including 18 years on the senior decision- making body, Policy and Resources Committee.

Her primary focus is on the health and mental wellbeing of City residents and workers. She has chaired the Health and Social Services Scrutiny Committee, Epping Forest and Commons Committee and Port Health and Environmental Services Committee.

Believing deeply that culture aids mental health, Wendy served 9 years as a Board Member of Guildhall School of Music and Drama, 16 years on the Board of Barbican Centre and 10 years on the City Arts Trust which ran the annual City of London Festival, she still serves  on the Culture Committee.

Trustee: The Guild of St. Bartholomew League of Friends (past Vice Chair)

Trustee: Housing the Homeless Central Fund (past Chair)

St. Bartholomew the Great Heritage Trust  ( served as Chair for 6 years )

Wendy was admitted as Sheriff of The City of London  in 2011, only the 4th woman since the 7th century to achieve this distinction. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for Civic and Community Services in the New Years Honours 2015 and during that year received an Award from the International Peace and Prosperity Foundation.

Wendy was elected by the Court of Common Council to serve as Chief Commoner in 2017-2018.
