Oliver was called to the Bar by Inner Temple in 1972 and took silk in 1995. A tenant at 5 Paper Buildings, he specialises in complex criminal cases and also sits as a Recorder, mainly at the Central Criminal Court. A Temple resident, he is very active in Inner Temple, becoming a Bencher in 1996 and serving on the Executive Committee from 2009 to 2012. He was Inner’s Master of the Garden for ten years and served on the Bar Council for 8 years.

Oliver was elected as a City Councillor on 23 March 2017 and is currently Chair of the Open Spaces & City Gardens Committee and Deputy Chair of the Planning & Transportation Committee, having previously chaired its Streets & Walkways Sub-Committee.
