Smithfield Market is the largest wholesale meat and poultry market in the United Kingdom and by statute is in the Ward of Farringdon Without, on a historic site where meat and livestock has been bought and sold for 800 years.

The Market and its traders are an important part of the City community, far outdating the modern trade in financial services. That is why the Temple and Farringdon Together team are committed to standing up for Smithfield and ensuring a sustainable future for its trade.

Councilmen Wendy Mead and Edward Lord have represented the Ward on the City Corporation’s Markets Committee for the past five years and are regular and active contributors to its discussions on Smithfield and on the other City markets – Billingsgate (fish) and New Spitalfields (fruit, vegetables, and flowers).

By keeping in regular touch with their constituents at Smithfield, especially through the Market Tenants’ Association, Edward and Wendy make sure that key issues of concern to the traders are represented and questions asked and answered.
